By analyzing over 3,000 projects and a large number of evaluations from Leader areas throughout Sweden, an overall picture of results, effects and added value emerges.
In the spring of 2026, the consulting company WSP studied a number of evaluations that have been made regarding LEADER. The study is based on a broad base from the period 2016–2025. The report clearly shows the difference LEADER makes – both locally and nationally.
Summary
At the local level, the projects contribute to:
- new meeting places and stronger community
- developed local economy and more opportunities for businesses
- solutions that complement public services
- increased inclusion and engagement
But the effects don't stop there. The projects also create long-term changes and ripple effects in the local community.
An important key is the leader method – where local actors themselves drive development. It strengthens commitment, accuracy and implementation power.
Overall, Leader contributes to Sweden by:
- connect EU initiatives with local needs
- strengthen the capacity to implement development efforts
- complement other regional development efforts
In short: Leader doesn't just create projects – but long-term development, stronger local communities and better conditions for the future.
