Sustainable development of the arts and crafts sector in Bergslagen – a preliminary study on the role of public education in supporting artists and craftsmen
ABF Örebro County is conducting a feasibility study that affects all of the Leader Bergslagen municipalities, i.e. also arts and crafts in northern Västmanland County and southern Dalarna.
About the project
The purpose of the project is to strengthen entrepreneurship for artisans in Bergslagen.
The goal of the project is to gather knowledge about the arts and crafts sector in Bergslagen and write a compilation of the material in public form.
The activities are project management of meetings, workshops and compiling the collected material into a feasibility study report.

Background
The background to the project is based on the challenges facing the arts and crafts sector in Bergslagen.
Despite the region's rich tradition and cultural heritage in arts and crafts, many artists and craftsmen have difficulty maintaining a sustainable and profitable business. This is due to several interacting factors:
Limited market coupling
Many artists and crafters lack insight into who their customers are and how to effectively reach them. They often lack the knowledge and tools to market themselves and their products, which hinders their ability to build and maintain a strong customer base.
Challenges with digitalization
In an increasingly digital world, many in the sector lack the necessary skills to establish and maintain a strong digital presence. This includes everything from building an effective website and using social media to selling products online through e-commerce platforms.
Lack of collaboration and networking
Artists and artisans often work in isolation, limiting their ability to collaborate with others in the sector. This results in lost opportunities for joint marketing efforts, shared sales platforms and collective initiatives that could strengthen their position on the market.
the market.
Economic vulnerability
Many artists and artisans have limited business skills, which affects their ability to price their products correctly, manage their finances and budget effectively. They also have difficulty navigating available support and funding opportunities, further weakening their economic sustainability.
Need for lifelong learning and intergenerational integration
There is a lack of continuous education and skills development in the sector, which prevents artists and craftsmen from developing and adapting to changing market conditions. Furthermore, it is important to include and engage younger generations to ensure the long-term survival and vitality of the sector.
Through the project, we want to meet these needs and solve the problems that prevent artists and craftsmen in Bergslagen from making a living from their craft and reaching their full potential. Our goal is to strengthen the sector through public education and cooperative development, create new opportunities for collaboration and growth, and build a long-term and sustainable foundation for the arts and crafts sector in the region.
