Summary
LEADER is a European programme with the aim to involve local groups in rural areas in the economic development of their own regions by forming Local Action Groups (LAGs) and by designing and implementing strategies. This is the local strategy for Leader Bergslagen in Sweden for 2023-2027.
Leader Bergslagen includes ten municipalities within three regions. Smedjebacken and Ludvika in southern Dalarna, Skinnskatteberg, Fagersta, Norberg and Surahammar in northern Västmanland, and Hällefors, Ljusnarsberg, Nora and Lindesberg in northern Örebro region.
The history of mining unites the area and there is a strong common identity among Bergslagen’s over 100,000 inhabitants. The nature is similar throughout the area with extensive forestry, hundreds of lakes, and various areas for recreation. The population density is low outside the municipal capitals. Historical traces from the industrialisation and mining era are present in all villages.
We wrote our development strategy in broad cooperation with the groups in Bergslagen. We have organised many workshops and meetings. All through the strategy process we have worked according to the Leader approach with representation from the public, private and non-profit sector. The seven features of the Leader approach are Bottom-up perspective, Innovation, Integrative initiatives, Networks, Cooperation, Local Action Groups (LAG) and local strategy.
